Latvia has not decided on a three euro customs duty for Chinese goods

Reports have circulated regarding the implementation of a three-euro customs duty on goods imported into Latvia from outside the European Union (EU). However, sources indicate that the decision regarding this specific duty rate does not originate from the Latvian government. The Customs Department of the State Revenue Service (VID) has clarified that the imposition and specific amount of any new customs duty are dictated by overarching EU regulations, rather than by national policy decisions made within Latvia.

This clarification addresses speculation circulating on social media platforms concerning low-priced goods purchased online from non-EU sources. The regulatory changes are phased in over time. Beginning July 1, an existing customs exemption will be repealed.

Under this initial phase, a three-euro customs duty will be applied to individual items within shipments whose total value does not exceed 150 euros. Furthermore, a more comprehensive change is scheduled for November 1. From this date, all incoming shipments originating from third countries will be subject to a standardized customs duty of three euros per item.

These adjustments represent a shift in the customs framework for imports. The VID emphasizes that these rules are part of the broader EU regulatory compliance process, establishing clear guidelines for tariffs and duties applicable to goods entering the Latvian market.
