The Maternity Hospital in Riga has reportedly closed ten family rooms, a development that has sparked discussion regarding resource allocation within the healthcare sector. The closure was publicly attributed to a reduction in state funding allocated to the facility this year. While Health Minister Hosams Abu Meri has contested the funding-based reasoning, the management of the Maternity Hospital has indicated disagreement with the minister’s stance.
According to reports, the planned state funding for the hospital faced a reduction estimated at approximately 750,000 euros, representing a 7.5% decrease. The Ministry of Health has justified the financial adjustments by citing declining birth rates over recent years. Data presented shows a significant drop in births recorded at the facility; in 2019, the hospital recorded 5,800 births, compared to only 3,600 last year.
Consequently, the ministry argues that the required level of services has decreased. Based on the ministry’s directive, the Maternity Hospital was required to close an entire floor containing the ten rooms designated for new families by August 25th. This decision impacts the provision of immediate postnatal care within the maternity wing.
The situation highlights ongoing tensions between budgetary constraints and the operational needs of the hospital to support new families.
